2 · Rally

Meet in front of the house

Pick something permanent a safe distance in front — a tree, light pole, or mailbox. Not the driveway, garage, backyard, or a neighbor’s side yard. Firefighters should be able to see you from the street.

3 · When the alarm sounds

Get out. Stay out.

  1. Know two ways out of every room. Windows count. Keep those paths clear.
  2. Stay low under smoke. Close doors behind you.
  3. Go to the rally. Count heads. Do not go back in.
  4. Call 911 from outside. Then tell the first crew what they need.

If you cannot get out

Stay put and signal

Close the door. Seal cracks with towels if you can. Call 911 and say the room. Wave a light or a light-colored cloth at the window. Do not hide in a closet.

4 · Call 911 from outside

5 · Draw the house

Two ways out of every room

Sketch each level or the main floor. Mark doors, windows, stairs, and sleeping rooms. Mark smoke alarms with SA. Mark the rally with an X in front of the house.

SA smoke alarm X rally in front → → two ways out Keep hallways, stairs, doors, and windows clear.

6 · Tell the first engine

Say this when the crew walks up

Stay at the rally. Do not walk them through a burning house. Point and speak clearly.

Extra hazards (oxygen, propane, e-bike / extra batteries, ammo):

7 · Smoke alarms

They have to work tonight

  • Inside every sleeping room
  • Outside sleeping areas
  • On every level, including basement
  • Tested this month

8 · Practice

Twice a year, day and night

Push the alarm. Time it. Aim for under two minutes. Include overnight guests.

Day drill:

Night drill:

Charge phones, tools, and e-bikes on a hard surface, not a bed or sofa. If extra batteries are in the garage or a bedroom, write that in the hazards line so the crew knows.
